Miniature nuclear reactors could give the UK energy freedom

The eye-watering cost of large nuclear power station projects has led to an explosion of interest in alternative nuclear technology – small modular reactors (SMRs). This week, an independent expert review commissioned by the UK government recommended that SMRs be offered the same subsidies given to offshore wind projects.

Nuclear capacity to triple by 2031

India's installed nuclear power capacity is expected to rise from the current 6,780MW to 22,480MW by 2031, the department of atomic energy told Parliament on Wednesday. This expansion is expected to come through the addition of nine nuclear power reactors with a cumulative capacity of 6,700MW by 2025, and 12 more reactors with a cumulative capacity of 9,000MW by 2031.

NNL, Wood contracted for nuclear fuel research

The UK's National Nuclear Laboratory (NNL) and the Wood Group have been awarded a three-year contract to carry out a key research project on fuels for advanced nuclear reactors. The contract - the value of which has not been disclosed - was awarded to the two organisations by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy.

Communities waste no time questioning nuclear future

Final questions concerning SA’s nuclear future were raised in Kimba last week in preparation for the ballot on the National Radioactive Waste Management Facility. Residents posed a range of questions to an expert panel that included representatives from the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency, the Australian Nuclear Science Technology Organisation, the National Radioactive Waste Management Taskforce and the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science.

Russia: Egypt to begin building nuclear reactor in 2020

Egypt will obtain a license to build the Dabaa nuclear plant by mid-2020, said the Russian deputy minister of industry and trade. Georgy Kalamanov added that Russian experts are currently completing designing the nuclear plant and surveying the area where it will be built.

New nuclear reactor being built in western Japan applies for safety checks

Chugoku Electric Power Co. on Friday applied to the government for safety screening of a nuclear reactor it is constructing, opening up the possibility of it becoming Japan's first newly built reactor to go into operation since the 2011 Fukushima crisis.

China promoting own technical standards to aid nuclear push overseas
